The Swimming 50p coin celebrates Aquatics at the Olympic Games, with a design by Jonathan Olliffe depicting an athlete moving through the water. Flowing lines across the reverse represent the surface of the pool and create a sense of movement around the athlete.
Two versions of the design exist. On the extremely rare original version, the water lines pass directly across the athlete’s face, partially obscuring the features. The design was subsequently modified so that the face appears much clearer, with the water lines reduced in this area. This revised design became the common version issued for circulation.
