The Be Prepared 50p coin was issued in 2007 to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the Scout Movement. The anniversary refers to Robert Baden-Powell’s experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907, an event widely regarded as the beginning of modern Scouting. The camp brought together a small group of boys for activities based on teamwork, outdoor skills, observation and self-reliance. Its success helped inspire Baden-Powell to develop the principles that would soon form the basis of the international Scouting movement.
The reverse features the distinctive Scout fleur-de-lis emblem, surrounded by the famous motto “BE PREPARED”. This simple but instantly recognisable design celebrates 100 years of Scouting and the values promoted by the movement, including preparedness, responsibility, practical skills, teamwork and service to others. From its British origins, Scouting developed into a worldwide movement involving millions of young people, giving the anniversary represented on this commemorative issue an international significance.
Is the 50p coin Be Prepared part of a series?
No. This commemorative issue does not belong to a series. It was created specifically to celebrate the centenary of the Scout Movement, marking 100 years since the events of 1907 that led to the development of modern Scouting.
