The Sherlock Holmes 50p coin was issued in 2019 to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, born in Edinburgh in 1859. The Scottish writer created the legendary detective in the late 19th century, introducing him to readers in “A Study in Scarlet” in 1887. Holmes would go on to become one of the most famous fictional characters in literary history.
The reverse pays tribute to Conan Doyle’s creation with the detective’s name surrounded by titles of his best-known adventures. When viewed closely, collectors can read references to stories such as “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, “The Sign of the Four” and “A Study in Scarlet”, creating a design closely connected to the author’s literary legacy.
Is the 50p coin Sherlock Holmes part of a series?
No. Unlike several literary-themed commemoratives issued over the years, this design was not part of a series. It was created for a specific occasion, celebrating 160 years since the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
