Value of the Isaac Newton 50 pence coin 2017 and 2018
The 2017 circulation issue already attracts more collector interest than many modern commemoratives, but the expensive 50p to look out for is the version dated 2018. This edition was never released into general circulation: visitors to The Royal Mint Experience could strike their own example between January and March 2018. Only 20,826 were struck by visitors, making it considerably scarcer than the regular 2017 circulation coin.
The table below shows the value of the Sir Isaac Newton 2017 50 pence and the 2018 one “Strike Your Own”. Pay particular attention to the date when identifying your coin, as the limited availability of the 2018 version means it can command a substantial premium compared with a standard circulated example from 2017.

The Isaac Newton 50p coin was issued in 2017 to commemorate the 375th anniversary of the scientist’s birth in 1642. One of the leading figures of the Scientific Revolution, he made fundamental contributions to mathematics, astronomy and physics. He also had a strong connection with British coinage, serving first as Warden and later as Master of the Mint.
The reverse, designed by Aaron West, draws inspiration from Proposition 11 in Book One of Principia Mathematica. Its geometric lines and curves reference his work on planetary motion and gravitational forces, creating a design closely connected to the scientific discoveries for which he became famous.
Is the 50p coin Sir Isaac Newton part of a series?
No. This issue was created as an individual commemorative design and does not belong to a wider series. It was released for one specific anniversary, although the same design was exceptionally struck again with a 2018 date for visitors to The Royal Mint Experience.
Our table below focuses on other commemoratives that also stand on their own. It provides an easy way to move between these individual issues and discover the story and collector value behind each one.
