The Battle of Hastings 50p coin was issued in 2016 to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the historic events of 1066. The confrontation took place on 14 October between the Norman army of William, Duke of Normandy, and the English forces led by King Harold II. William’s victory ultimately led to the Norman conquest of England and profoundly changed the country’s political, social and cultural history.

The reverse design takes inspiration from the famous Bayeux Tapestry and depicts King Harold with an arrow in his eye, recalling the traditional account of his death during the fighting. This imagery creates a direct visual connection with one of the best-known representations of the Norman Conquest.

Is the 50p coin Battle of Hastings part of a series?

No. It was issued specifically to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the events of 1066 and does not form part of a wider commemorative series. The design was created exclusively for this important historical anniversary.
